I saw the comments to a recent entry here talk about lint tools. Do any of you use some form of lint regularly (and do they help you a lot)?

And are there any free ones available for windows and/or osx, that handle C++? I searched for them a few times, and IIRC, I only found one free one that would run on Windows, that handled C only.

Thanks, that's a long list though (and sadly does not distinguish between C and C++, price or platform... a lot of searching to do. I'm hoping someone here has some recomendations! But maybe I'll go through the list while waiting for compiles at work ;-)

I think parsing it is easy compared to looking out for the hundreds of things that are technically legal but probably not what the user wanted to do.

That said I used to do those lint tests on breaks and half of them are things that are caught by the compiler or not even legal syntax anymore (e.g. the dreaded address-of-function implicit conversion).
